Mission Impossible and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Boxing Day Blockbusters Reviewed

Mission Impossible and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Boxing Day Blockbusters

Both films were released on Boxing Day amid torrents of hype and fan expectation but the question is, does either deserve a place in its fans hearts.

The first of the two films I saw was the girl with the dragon tattoo directed by David Fincher of social network fame, not to mention many other hit films. I didn’t really know what to expect from the film as I had neither read the books nor seen the original Swedish films by the same name. I had seen the trailer however and expected something a kin to a tense thriller, and although can eerily be described as such, it is so much more.

The film centres on the live of hacker Lisbeth who has lived a far from comfortable life. She has been mistreated at every turn and as such has grown up to be a very aggressive young girl. We also have Daniel Craig’s character, a journalist, who’s reputation is damaged after printing a story which is successfully challenged by the company to which it is about. Characters introduced and you’re sent on a merry plot to discover the darkest secrets of an odd and frankly disturbing family.

The acting is very good on the whole, the story filled with many twists and bumps and the scenes of violence (as apposed to action) are certainly violent. Amidst all the mystery is a constant tone of tension and the film never allows you to sit back and enjoy as it throws multiple harrowing scenes towards you. If you can stomach the dark, DARK tone of the film then you are sure to enjoy it, but if you’re looking to relax then be warned, this isn’t for you.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is the fourth in a franchise that hasn’t always delivered. The 1st a classic for its memorable set pieces, the second an average action film, and the 3rd which was somewhere in between.

Ethan hunt is back on screen and continues in the vain of super spy. Simon pegg plays a Q type character with a license to be involved in the action and Jeremy Renner steps up as bad ass number two. There’s also a fit woman but I don’t remember her name… she was fit.

The general story goes that the IMF (MI6 type organisation) has been Implicated in terrorism and the president has kicked off and told them there all fired (or disavowed if you please) from here, hunt and co go after the real baddies and set the world right again. In doing so there’s some fighting, some chasing, some shooting and some shouting at each other.

The film has some very good comic touches which don’t spoil the atmosphere and performances on the whole are good. The action is mixed up with some light spy work and set pieces in general are excellent.

Personally I would say not quite as good as the 1st, but the film takes the franchise into a new era sensationally and for that director brad bird deserves much credit. Best film I’ve seen in 2012 so far.

Faces laugh
Hands point
There is no crowd
There is no show
There is you
You
You are
But will not
Be…
Beneath?
Belong?
Because?
Be gone
Time ticks slowest for the man who waits
What patience a virtuous man
When patience bestows no virtue
Let faces laugh
Let hands point
Let crowds gather
Let there be a show
There is you
And you are
Best
At being you
